The Reduction of a Text

Students will learn how to perform the generic and selective reduction of a text. By learning how to identify and shorten the core information in a text, the students will be ready to learn, as a further step, how to write a good summary.

Lesson plan

Class:

• 3-4th year students
• intermediate level

Prerequisites:

• The students should have already studied the basic components of the English syntax. They should be able to recognize adjectives, adverbs, linkers, etc in a text. They should also be able to read and understand complex texts, identifying personal opinions and nuances.

Lecture organisation:

• 1 x 45 mins. lecture + class

Teaching strategies and tools:

• The students may need a handout with a copy of the exercises in order to take notes and work individually.
• Use of visual materials and PowerPoint.

• By learning how to identify and shorten the core information in a text, the students will be ready to learn, as a further step, how to write a good summary.
